Asian American Scholar Forum Cautions Misguided New Visa Policy Targeting Chinese Students Harms U.S. Talent Pipeline

May 29, 2025

The Asian American Scholar Forum (AASF) is concerned about the May 28 statement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio announcing aggressive efforts to revoke visas for Chinese students and increase scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong and in critical fields. These sweeping policies, which target students based on national origin and field of study, mark a dangerous escalation in xenophobic rhetoric and risk undermining America’s global leadership in science, research, and innovation.

“This policy threatens to dismantle the international talent pipeline that has long fueled American innovation and excellence,” said Gisela Perez Kusakawa, Executive Director of the Asian American Scholar Forum. “Many of our best and brightest talents started out as bright-eyed students on our campuses, coming from all around the world. Believing in the American dream, they went on to sink their roots, build careers, have families, and make tremendous contributions to our country. Chinese students contribute immensely to our campuses, communities, and economy. Treating them with blanket suspicion not only violates principles of fairness, due process, and our democratic values—it sends a chilling message to the world that America no longer welcomes global talent.”

AASF calls on policymakers and academic institutions to reject fear-driven restrictions and reaffirm their commitment to freedom, fairness, excellence, and our democratic principles.
